I found this horrifying sight while working for a carpenter friend that was installing a 3rd floor bathroom in a home full of kids, one of which has muscular dystrophy and needed a shower (and fan/light) without a lip or border so she could get a shower without help, getting her legs over a tub or even a small lip was very hard, and asking for help wasn't impossible, its just alot more dignified taking a shower for yourself.
I dropped a feed down to the cellar and saw a plastic j-box and would change that, as i never leave shoddy work i find, even when its probably up to code, plastic boxes... anywhere i see them... are changed. They ARE shoddy by MY standard.
Using my ticker, i found it was live and opened it. First, i could SMELL melting plastic... then, as the cover was metal, and that may have SAVED this wonderful family, it had molten plastic, like a CANDLE had been dripped on it.
Then the wires, as i pulled them out, crumbled their melted insulation like ashes.
Some howkey looser family friend added 12 amps, mostly lighting, to the feed about a year ealier, and failed, failed this family mostly, by representing himself as someone that, as the Dad, a lawyer, said ""i know how to do wires"".
The kitchen lighting DID look nice, under counter, cans, fan, tracks... the switching all worked, even the three ways worked. !
BUT.... a poor splice ahead of all that pretty lighting, was 50' from its 20 amp square D QO breaker, and that first-rate breaker had NO CHANCE... to trip, allowing 13 total amps by, as it is designed to do.. the HEAT of that piss-poor splice would NEVER travel down the wire to let the breaker know there was a problem.
